I know the last thing we want to do when we go home from a long shift at work is to look at educational materials. Making myself do CEUs is probably one of the most difficult things to do in my off time. However, now more than ever it is important to go to work prepared and armed with as much information as possible. This seems as good a time as any to learn as much as possible to be able to properly care for ourselves and others while also getting all those CEU credits. Below is a list of resources put out to help you help others.
Nicole is a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist with an impressive number of certifications. She has a passion for educating nurses and providing them with the tools to perform their jobs well and safely. Nicole has several books and courses that are all on sale as of this post, and most notably two courses to help nurses on the front lines being trained to use ventilators who have never cared for a ventilated patient before. Her “Unveiling the Mysteries of Mechanical Ventilation Online Course” is now $49 for 6 contact hours and unlimited access for 6 months.
Kati Kleber of FreshRN has a number of amazing resources available right now. For starters, she has just posted a comprehensive list of the current PPE recommendations and how to make sense of them. She also has a post on how to properly remove your PPE to avoid self-inoculation of the virus.
Kati and FreshRN also have several courses available for nurses, most notably her “Breakthrough ICU” which teaches nurses how to be an effective ICU nurse which includes modules on arterial lines, providing empathy, curbing your own stress response and how to remain calm in stressful situations, and how to talk to rude or unkind patients – all of which I have faced as a non-ICU nurse. In my opinion, this would definitely be a benefit for any healthcare professional right now, particularly those finding themselves suddenly taking care of more highly acute patients than they may be used to. As of February 7th the course was on sale for $157 and provides 12 CE hours/credits.
If you went to nursing school recently, you probably had several Unbound Medicine apps on your phone. I could have an entire blog post dedicated to how awesome these apps are for providing easily accessible and comprehensive clinical information at your fingertips. Within their Relief Central App, they are publishing “Coronavirus Guidelines” with information and live updates from experts and reputable sources like Johns Hopkins and the WHO. Webinars and PubMed articles are also included in this FREE app (many of their apps are paid so this is awesome)!
Something we don’t talk nearly enough about but so many of us our experiencing right now – nurse burn out. Kelsey Rowell of Whole Life Nurse advocates for nurses to take control of their career and find their passion and joy again. Her course, “Crafting Your Dream Career” is meant to help you transition from a toxic work environment, navigating what you need from a career to improve your mental health, and how to get into the nursing job of your dreams. I read a lot of Kelsey’s posts on Instagram and she puts out great information on how to advocate for yourself on the job.
